A Companion Animal Advance Directive serves as your guide to navigating emergencies, end-of-life care, and the death and dying process. While it can feel heavy and even scary to think of end-of-life before it arrives, planning ahead can empower you in your decision-making for your animal, and can help you feel more prepared for your animal’s end-of-life journey. An advance directive can be written at any stage in your animal’s life, and saved as a resource for later use.
During our Advance Directive Planning Session, we will take some time to consider your wishes for your animal’s end-of-life care. Together, we will talk through some of the decisions that may arise during that time. We will explore some of the options that are available to you and your animal, and I can provide referrals to resources in your area. If you have questions or are curious about what to expect during the death and dying process and/or a typical euthanasia procedure, I can explain that as well. We will also reflect on what kind of support you may need as you care for your animal and grieve their loss, and who you would like to include in your support system. By the end of our work together, you will have a document with your wishes for your animal, the contact info for the professionals and resources you hope to use, and a plan for grief support all collected in one place. An 11-page advance directive planning guide is included as part of our session.
Please Note: Advance Directive Planning Sessions are best when focused on planning for one animal. If you are a multi-animal household, you may use the planning guide provided to independently add additional animals to your advance directive, or we can schedule additional sessions to plan for additional animals together.
